74 Squadron (I Fear No Man). Flight Lieutenant Nelson was killed when his Spitfire aircraft was shot down off Dover, England during operations. He earned his first D.F.C. when he completed his first tour of operations flying Whitley aircraft with 10 Squadron before the Battle of Britain. He transferred to Spitfire aircraft on June 2, 1940 and was awarded his second D.F.C. Flight Lieutenant Nelson was an ace having destroyed six enemy aircraft and he was the only Canadian to win a D.F.C. in both Bomber and Fighter Command.
