After flight training Gauld was posted to 10TS at Joyce Green as an instructor. He was killed at Harlaxton on 1918-03-25 when an RE-8 he was giving instruction in, spun, crashed and caught fire. Both Gauld and the student pilot, 2Lt Alexander Drysdale (British) were killed in the crash.
