131 Squadron (Invicta) RAF Thorney Island. Two Spitfire Vb aircraft (AB 850 and BM 472) on a ground radar calibration test flight, were intercepted and shot down by multiple Fw 190 aircraft and crashed in the sea thirty-five miles south-east of Selsey, Sussex, England

Pilot Officer JL Davidson (RCAF) in Spitfire Vb AB 850 and Sergeant J Gray (RAFVR) were missing, believed killed. Pilot Officer Davidson and Sergeant Gray have no known grave and are both commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial
