Took off from Libya in Kittyhawk FR-195 on a bomber escort Mission and failed to return, (most likely lost in the sea).
Flying Officer Curphey has no known grave and is commemorated on the Alamein War Memorial (http://raf-112-squadron.org/planelosses.html)
(The serial FR195 was properly applied to a Mitchell bomber, but according to research by Buz at www.rafcommands.com several Kittyhawk fighters with serials applied to other aircraft did exist and were used by this Squadron. The reason remains a mystery)
Flying Officer Curphey was BROTHER to Flying Officer Robert Maurice Curphey (RCAF), killed in a flying accident 1942-11-22 in 400 Sqn Master N 8067 in England
