Spitfire aircraft MJ 203 was engaged in a daylight rail cutting operation and after attacking a train at Canaro, Italy the aircraft was hit by 88 millimeter flak.
Flying Officer Crawford got out of the aircraft at 5,000 feet, at 3,000 feet he appeared to be hanging on to the radio mast, at 1,000 feet he got clear of the aircraft and fell without opening his parachute. The Spitfire hit the ground fifteen miles southeast of Ferraro, Italy.
