Took off from Oakington at 14:58 in Stirling Mk I (Sqn code MG-A Bomber Command) on an operation to bomb warships in Brest Harbour.

Returning to base the port outer engine caught fire and the pilot decided to make an emergency landing.

The aircraft overshot the landing and crashed one mile west of the Needingworth Road, Cambridge.

Killed includes Comroe: Flying Officer James Albert Lopez RAAF KIA Cambridge City Cemetery Grave 6762. Flying Officer John Thompson O'Brien RAF KIA Cambridge City Cemetery Grave 6441. Sergeant James Edward Rose RAF KIA Putney Vale Cemetery And Crematorium Block W. Grave 774.

Sergeant T J Ryder RAF and Sergeant J Devlin RAAF were injured in the crash; Sergeant M Sullivan was uninjured.
