A professional soldier, he was commissioned in March 1911. In the infantry he had risen to the rank of Major when he was wounded. On recovery he transferred to the RAF. After flight training he was posted to 19 Squadron in the summer of 1917 and to 123 Sqn (all Canadian) at the end of the war. He was killed in 1919 in a flying accident when a Fokker DVII he was testing broke up in the air. He shot down 28 enemy aircraft.
