Spitfire Vb aircraft BL 662 DL-A shot down in the English Channel.

Warrant Officer Class 2 FY Campbell (RCAF) and another member of his Squadron, Sergeant AJ Clayton (RAAF) were acting as spotters in an ASR search over the English Channel when Campbell reported that he was under attack. Nothing further was heard until Sergeant Clayton baled out and was rescued from the sea after also being shot down. They were attacked by three German ME-109 fighter aircraft, resulting in both Spitfires being shot down. Warrant Officer Class 2 Campbell was missing, presumed killed. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial.
