12 Sqn (Leads The Field) RAF Binbrook, Wellington II aircraft W 5514 PH-S on a sortie to bomb warships in the harbour at Brest, France was attacked by a night fighter. While engaged in dive on evasive maneuvers, the Captain ordered a bale out, but only Sergeant HD Bryant baled before control was regained and the order rescinded. The aircraft struck high tension cables and crashed on approach to land at RAF Ashbourne in England but the rest of the crew, Pilot Officer JM Garlick (RAF), Sergeant N Erskine (RAF), Sergeant BL Schauenberg (RAF), Sergeant EFA Matthews (RAF) and Sergeant J Stevens (RAF) were safe. Sergeant HD Bryant (RCAF) was posted as missing, presumed killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Runnymede War Memorial.
