Best served with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps before transferring to the RFC. On 1917-10-26 he was attached to 27 Sqn RFC. 1917-11-12: During a course in compass flying, Best's aircraft crashed near Montreuil, for unknown reasons. Both pilot 2Lt Frederick Philip Galloway (British) and his gunner Best died of injuries suffered in the crash.
