It is signed by the late Bill Bryant RAF who was the navigator of that aircraft piloted by Bob Boorman RCAF. Philpott, and Corporal W.H. Grant, his observer, were taken POW when the engine of Philpott's RE 8 failed and he was compelled to land. Philpott died of dysentery in captivity on 1918-01-15. Grant survived the war. Philpott had been recommended for the VC, but was awarded the MC, instead.
