Philpott, and Corporal W.H. Grant, his observer, were taken POW when the engine of Philpott's RE 8 failed and he was compelled to land. Philpott died of dysentery in captivity on 1918-01-15. Grant survived the war. Philpott had been recommended for the VC, but was awarded the MC, instead.
