Jeffs' aircraft was attacked by a hostile machine NE of Bapaume, near Fremicourt, and brought down in flames on offensive patrol. Jeffs jumped out of the plane before it hit the ground, rather than burn on the way down. His pilot Sjt. Haxton, had probably been wounded or killed in the initial attack.
