Dixon transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in April 1917. Before becoming a pilot, he scored two victories as an observer with 43 Squadron. In July 1918, he joined 85 Squadron as an SE5a pilot and scored two more victories. A month later, he was a flight commander with 40 Squadron, scoring five more victories before he was wounded in action on 16 September 1918.
