Shot down by a German aircraft. **L.S.**
Van Allen was shot down in his Caudron aircraft during a bombing raid on the Mariakerk Aerodrome in Belgium. He was captured by Germans troops and made a prisoner of war, but died a week later of the injuries sustained in the air battle and crash. At the conclusion of the war, Van Allen's mother Letitia donated money to build the west wing of the Summerland Hospital as a memorial to her son.
