McLaren was Australian by birth but came to Canada in the 1900s. He enlisted in the RFC in Toronto, in 1917. He died in Nieuport Scout B-1648, missing after an engagement with an enemy aircraft over Menin, while on a distant offensive patrol. Presumed dead, his body was found and was buried by the Germans beside the Roulers - Morslede Road in an un-marked grave.
