408 Goose Squadron (For Freedom). Halifax aircraft JB 922 was shot down at Dusseldorf, Germany during operations over Gelsenkirchen, Germany. FS W.R. Prentice and Flying Officer E. Crouch (RAF) were also killed. Three Canadians, Sergeants PIewman, Willis, and Warrant Officer A.N. Pixley, were taken Prisoners of War. One of the crew, not Canadian, missing believed taken Prisoner of War. Flying Officer Mellish maintained control of the aircraft long enough for his crew to bail out but he went down with the aircraft. Warrant Officer Pixley died as a P.O.W. in Apr 45. There were two 408 Sqdn. aircraft lost in the same area on this date. Please see FS J.J. Stefanchuk for information regarding the other crew and aircraft.
