190 Squadron. Wellington XIII aircraft NC 489 swung on take-off from B78 airstrip at Eindhoven, Holland. The pilot continued with the take off finally lifting the aircraft off violently to avoid the obstructing woods. The aircraft stalled and crashed. Warrant Officer J.A. Hay, two members of the crew and two passengers, not Canadians, were also killed. One Canadian, Flying Officer Insley, survived. Addendum: - They were unable to land at Gardanioen, Norway, due to severe weather but managed to land at Eindhoven with unserviceable engines. This crew transferred to Stirling IV LJ 937 as passengers which then crashed on take off. 190 Squadron casualties were; Flying Officer J.H. Vanular (RCAF), Warrant Officer J.A. Hay (RCAF) and FS. Coghlan (RAF) and FS W. Dexter (RAF) killed, Flying Officer Insley (RCAF) and FS L.C. Sharp (RAF) injured. Detail provided by Bob Middleton of Killarney, Manitoba. Addendum: WO. J. Wellington aircraft BJ 841 was shot down and crashed fifteen miles west of Dusseldorf, Germany at Monchen-Gladbach. Sgt. A.R. Daily (RNZAF) and three RAF crew members, Sgt.s DD. Northfield, A.W. Daniel, and S.B. Ward were also killed.
