429 Bison Squadron (Fortunae Nihil) RAF Leeming. Halifax BII aircraft JD 275 AL-T was shot down by night fighter pilot Hauptmann Heinz-Martin Hadeball (Staffelkapitän of the 3/NJG 6), flying a Bf 110 G-4 from Mainz-Finthen, Germany during approach to the target at Mannheim, Germany
FS S Smith (RCAF), Sergeant JJ Crawford (RCAF) were killed in action
Flying Officer CM Weicker (RCAF), Pilot Officer BF Findlay (RCAF), Sergeant RG Stewart (RCAF), Sergeant FK Morris (RCAF) and Sergeant OJ Davis (RAFVR) survived and were taken as Prisoners of War
Rear Gunner Sergeant Morris died three days later of peritonitis caused by gunshot wounds to the abdomen suffered in the night fighter attack
A survivor, Ex Pilot Officer Flight Engineer Robert Stewart then of Roland, Manitoba and now of Surrey, British Columbia had this to say, "We were approaching Mannheim when an enemy fighter hit us from below with his upward firing guns. I saw the mid upper gunner was killed and some of the incendiaries were on fire. Stan Smith ordered a bale out and three of the guys went. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put out the fire, the incendiaries dulled to a dark red but flared up again. I was right beside Stan as he yelled "Jump and I'll be right behind you". By this time we were down to several thousand feet from 21,000, and in a shallow dive. It crashed and blew up not far from where I landed. I've often wondered what happened those last few seconds as Stan didn't get out, and why I was spared"
Flight Sergeant Smith had survived the crash of 24 OTU Whitley V aircraft N 1390 when it clipped a propeller on the runway, 1943-8-31
