428 Ghost Squadron (Usque Ad Finem). On July 24, 1944 the crew of Sergeants J. Sandulak, A.R. McNaught, T. Davidson, S.T. Bryans, Pilot Officer C. Corbett, Flying Officer G.F. Jones, and Sergeant R. Enfield (RAF) were in a mid-air collision over France whilst outward bound for a raid on Stuttgart, Germany. Their Lancaster aircraft caught fire after both starboard engines exploded. The pilot first ordered the crew to bail out then quickly changed his mind but Sergeant Sandulak had already jumped. The Lancaster returned to England and made a crash landing on the aerodrome at Woodbridge, Sussex. Sergeant Sandulak bailed out safely and was an Evader for six weeks. The remainder of the crew went on leave and shortly after went back on operations with Pilot Officer Good as the replacement air gunner. During a night attack against Bremen, Germany, Pilot Officer Good was killed when the tail of their Lancaster aircraft KB 743 was lost either from flak, a collision, or a bomb from an aircraft flying above. The rest of the crew, McNaught, Davidson, Bryans, Corbett, Jones, and Enfield bailed out, were taken Prisoner of War and were released from a P.O.W. camp in May of 1945. The original crew all met in Winnipeg, Manitoba in August of 1945 not until then knowing what had happened to their original air gunner between July 24, 1944 and August of 1945.
