Ackerman was an American who joined the RFC, in Canada, in 1917. 1917-10-25: Ackerman was injured in a Curtiss JN-4a, which stalled in turning and spun to earth. His instructor, 2Lt Harry Yarwood Lewis (Canadian) was slightly injured. 1918-06-11: Ackerman was wounded in Camel, D-9382. The fuselage broke in half in a forced landing due to the pilot being shot in the arm by an enemy aircraft on a low strafe at Le Mesnil.
