Clive died piloting a BE2c with Petty Officer T.C.M. Reardon in the second seat in a crash near Edinburgh, Scotland. Clive was killed when he swerved his aeroplane to avoid some boys playing in a field, when he had to make a forced landing because of engine trouble. He had joined the RNAS while still a student at Caius College, Cambridge. He was stationed at RNAS East Fortune near Edinburgh.
