Gale had served with the 2nd Life Guards, Cavalry as a Lieutenant and the Royal Field Artillery as a Captain before transferring to the RFC as a Captain, which he did on 1915-09-12. He was serving with 3 Sqn as an observer when he was killed with his pilot Lt. Col. Lewis by a direct hit of an A.A. shell on his aircraft, at 4,000 feet, which blew the tail off the plane.
