Bayly was educated at the Diocesan College School in Rondebosch; the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, London and St Paul's School at Hammersmith, London. before he enlisted in the RFC. He was killed while on active reconnaissance duty as an observer with the RFC in Belgium, when his aircraft was shot down while flying over the German lines, brought down by the massed rifle fire of the German troops on the roads below them.
