Wulstan Tempest enlisted in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 1914-11-30. He went to France with them and fought in the Battle of Ypres, where he was gassed. Invalided back to England to recuperate he transferred to the RFC in early 1916 received his RAC Aero Certificate in April and on June 17 was brevetted to the RFC General List. He was posted to No.39 Home Defence Sqn, based in North Weald, Essex. He was patrolling in B.E.2c night fighter (4557) in 1916-10-01 when he saw a Zeppelin caught in searchlights over Potters Bar He attacked the Zepplin and shot it down. It was identified as L.31. He was subsequently awarded the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order.
