On 1917-08-17, MacLeod was commissioned a second lieutenant in the RFC. Just over a year after his appointment as an officer, he joined No. 41 Squadron flying the SE.5a. On 30 August he scored his first aerial victory. In total, MacLeod downed seven enemy aircraft. He was awarded both a Distinguished Flying Cross and the Belgian Croix de Guerre for his actions.
MacLeod left the Air Force in March 1919, ending his military service.
He returned to University in Canada, later in 1919. He joined the business world in 1927 until 1941-04-04 when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot officer. From 1947 through 1960, he was managing director of Saunders-Roe.
