Morrow enlisted in the RFC in June 1917. He was posted to 62 Squadron RFC on 1917-10-31, and shipped out to France with this unit. He scored his first aerial victory on 1918-03-26. Between then and 1918-08-22 he shot down 7 enemy aircraft, and after the last on that date was himself shot down in flames. Regaining consciousness in the burning, spinning plane he managed to regain sufficient control to crash land on the allied side of the lines, near Ficheux, France with bullet wounds to the leg, Morrow was dragged from the flaming wreckage by his observer, Lt. Louis Mark Thompson. Morrow's left lower leg was subsequently amputated. Ernest Morrow gave up his commission because of ill health caused by wounds, retaining the honorary rank of captain, on 1919-01-08. He would live until 1949-07-20, dying in his hometown of Waubashene. Listed as Ernest Thomas Morrow by the London Gazette and Royal Canadian Air Force. Listed as Ernest Theophilus Morrow in Grub Street books. Neither middle name is supported by the birth and census records.
