Godfrey flew as an observer with 10 & 25 Squadrons from July to December 1916 and applied then for pilot training, which was granted. He did the training in the first third of 1917 before joining 40 Sqn flying Camels. He was the 3rd highest scorer in the Squadron and returned to Home Establishment in September 1917 where he served until April, 1918. He then returned to Canada where he was the Commandant of the School of Aerial Fighting at Beamsville, Ontario.
