Atkey took his flying training in early 1917 with 27 & 28 Reserve Squadrons.
For his gunner/observer in 22 Squadron, he chose Ltn. Charles Gass. They were deadly together, shooting down 29 enemy aircraft in less than a month.
On one occasion, their Bristol Fighter was so badly shot up that Gass had to crawl out onto the lower wing to counter-balance the aircraft so that Atkey could fly it back to base.
Atkey's gravestone indicates that he was a Flying Officer in the RCAF during WWII.
