Mitchell was seriously wounded at Passchendale in October of 1917 with the CEF and was evacuated to England. In May of 1918, he was promoted to 2nd-Lieutenant with the Royal Air Force. Mitchell served with 112HD Sqn from July 1917 at Throwley Aerodrome for air defence duties protecting the area around London. It was initially equipped with Pups, but received Camels in 1918. Mitchell died in a flying accident on 1919-01-24 while flying a Camel. The records indicate only that his aircraft spun into the ground.
