47 Squadron (Nil Nomen Roboris Omen) Gianaclis, Egypt. Beaufort Mk Ia DE115 "G" lost off Tobruk, shot down attacking the SS Proserpina convoy bringing fuel and ammunition to Axis forces in North Africa. Flying Officer HJ Davidson (RCAF) and FS SB Gitsham (RAAF) missing, presumed killed. They have no known graves and are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial. Tanker Proserpina, "Rommel's Last Tanker", sunk off Tobruk by a torpedo launched by Pilot Officer RV Manning in 47 Sqn Beaufort DE 120, ending the last opportunity for large scale fuel delivery to the Afrika Corps in Egypt. Without this ship which Rommel had counted on the German and Italian forces engaged in front of El Alamein, already very short of fuel, were unable to mount an effective defense to the attacks of the 8th Army (A Beevor)
