F/Lt H J Cleary (RCAF) was the pilot of Spitfire Mk IX MH-512 LO-Q, engaged in a daylight reconnaissance on 1944-07-01 over the Argentan area of France when he reported by r/t that his aircraft had been hit by flak from the German motor transport column he had attacked. His Spitfire was last seen as it disappeared into cloud, flying north and it crashed thirty miles south-east of Caen at Fontaine-Les-Bassets, France.

Flight Lieutenant Cleary had baled out and was an Evader, managing to find and join up with some other allied Evaders in the same predicament, but they were all killed in a gun battle with German troops on July 8, 1944. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Cleary was buried at St Clair, France, exhumed, and reburied in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, France.
