Blackie died in Sopwith Camel C-96. The left main planes of Camel C-8322 and right plane of Camel C-96 both collapsed after a mid-air collision and both spun to the ground, probably during photography. The pilot of the other Camel, Lt. A. F. Belyea was also killed in the crash.
