Belyea was building up his hours at solo flying in Camel C-8322 when his aircraft was struck from the rear by Camel C-96 flown by Lt. Austin Wyard Blackie (Canadian). The collision cause the collapse of his left side wings and the right side wings of C96. They stuck together in the crash and spun to the ground. Belyea and Blackie were both killed.
