Baker was killed in a mid-air collision at Benbow Field, one of three airfields in the training complex. He was flying through cloud when the collision occurred. The two aircraft locked together and fell to the ground. Baker, and his instructor, 2nd-Lieutenant Thomas Russell Jenner (Canadian) in one, Cadet Arthur William Webster Eden (Canadian) in the other. All three were killed.
