1918-03-20: Arnold survived when the Maurice Farman in which he was ranging shot in a naval engagement between two British Monitors and the German Cruiser S.M.S. Konigsberg was shot down. He was awarded the DSO for his bravery in doing so. When the aircraft over-turned in the river he rescued the trapped pilot (not named). This was the first award to a Canadian in the RNAS.
