Took off from Berka on a night anti-submarine patrol supporting convoy 'Parcel' and was last heard from approximately 100 miles north of Benghazi, Libya.
During the patrol MP 679 was joined by another aircraft on a similar patrol. It is considered likely that a collision occurred between MP 679 and Wellington HZ 727, and that both aircraft fell into the sea on fire. Fire and smoke were observed in position 32.56N and 19.50E.
Killed on MP679 includes Berkley: Flying Officer William Howard Bowen RAAF 400775 KIA Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Column 281. Flying Officer Jack Alexander Cleary RAAF 401301 KIA Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Column 281. Pilot Officer Lloyd George Dalgleish RCAF J/18635 KIA Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Column 281. Flying Officer Robert Howard Head RCAF J/17011 KIA Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Column 281. Flying Officer Morris George Turner RAF 142847 KIA Alamein Memorial, Egypt, Column 279.
The casualties from Wellington HZ 727 are carried under that serial number.
