Shot down by German aircraft. Lt R.L. Johnston (Canadian pilot) was also killed. *L.S.* 1918-05-09: Melanson was killed as was his Canadian pilot Lt. Robin Louis Johnston. Their Armstrong-Whitworth was shot down in flames by four enemy scouts north of Illies, near Rue de Marais, while on an artillery observation mission.
