Spitfire MJ-982 was last seen in a vertical dive at 3000 feet just before Flying Officer Cummings released a bomb on the bridge near Montchat, on the Cherbourg Peninsula, France.

Aircraft disintegrated and crashed when pilot attempted to pull out of the dive.
