Sergeant J A Breadner MBE (RAF)(Can) was in the groundcrew with 242 Squadron, in charge of 409 ELS Echelon landed in Normandy early on D-Day. He displayed outstanding courage, coolness and devotion to duty at all times and was undoubtedly personally responsible for the efficient and successful work of the Echelon under conditions of extreme difficulty and danger. While working to salvage a crashed aircraft within range of enemy fire, he ordered his party to disperse to safety but continued working along with Leading Aircraftman G T Forgham (RAFVR). Both Sergeant Breadner and Leading Aircraftman Forgham were killed.
