The Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck (affectionately known as the "Clunk") was a Canadian jet interceptor/fighter in service during the Cold War both in NATO bases in Europe and as part of NORAD. The CF-100 was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production, serving primarily with the RCAF and the Canadian Armed Forces, and also in small numbers in Belgium. For its day, the CF-100 featured a short takeoff run and high climb rate, making it well suited to its role as an interceptor.
Production consisted of 5 pre-production CF-100 Mk. 2 aircraft, 74 machine gun armed CF-100 Mk. 3 aircraft, 280 CF-100 Mk. 4 aircraft armed with both machine guns and rocket pods, and 331 CF-100 Mk. 5 aircraft armed only with rocket pods. Harold Skaarup web page

Zurakowski ejected successfully at 2,000 feet and 250 - 300 knots, test engineer John Hiebert went down with aircraft. He probably attempted to eject, but rear seats usually fouled on canopy in early CF-100s, or wind blast after canopy did jettison prevented rear seat occupant from reaching ejection handle.Known Squadron Assignments:

Operated by 3 Operational Training Unit (OTU), CFB Bagotville, Quebec. While there, on November 7, 1962, F/Os Dave Saunders and Norm Grondin were test flying at 15,000 feet. As part of the testing, negative g was applied to the aircraft and both crew's ejection seats rolled up the rails. Somehow, during servicing the ground crew had failed to properly secure the seats to the floor. When the drogue guns fired on the ejection seats, the pilot's drogue was severed. However, Grondin's deployed successfully and he was ejected from the aircraft and forced to make a nylon letdown into the Quebec wilderness. Saunders managed to stay in the aircraft by holding onto the stick and removing the negative forces from the aircraft. He eventually made a smooth landing back at Bagotville, with navigator's drogue chute stuck on horizontal stabilizer. Both crew members were okay after the incident. Later used by the Aeronautical Engineering and Test Establishment (AETE), CFB Cold Lake, Alta. Carried experimental cameras and line-scan equipment while with AETE. Became CAF 100747 .
