Roberts was American born from Duluth, Minnesota and came to Canada in 1914 to join the CEF. He flew with 4 Squadron as an observer in 1916 and was wounded on 1916-07-02. While recuperating he qualified as a pilot but never flew operationally. He resigned his commission on 1917-07-02 to author "A Flying Fighter: An American Above The Lines In France" (New York, 1918).
