1659 Heavy Conversion Unit RAF Topcliffe, Halifax II W 1112 was taking off for circuits practice when both engines on one side failed. The aircraft swung into soft ground and lost it's undercarriage, badly damaging the aircraft. This aircraft had previously been damaged on operations on multiple occasions by flak and a belly landing, had been repaired and returned to service. After this event it was deemed beyond repair and stuck off charge 1944-04-07 Pilot Officer GA Wolstencroft (RCAF)(USA), Pilot Officer GB Ellis (RAF) and their crew safe |
