10 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit RAF St Eval Whitley V aircraft Z 9440 "N" was on an anti-submarine patrol when it sighted and attacked U-459, a heavily armed "milch-cow" or supply submarine, returning to port from a re-supply patrol. The Whitley did not drop all it's depth charges on the first run, and the rear guns jammed, but the pilot, Sergeant LO Slade (RAF), returned for a second attack, in which his aircraft was hit and damaged. With one engine out he was forced to ditch the aircraft where he and his crew, Sergeant WJ Wood, Pilot Officer BA Russell (RCAF), Sergeant WF Wicks (RAF), Sergeant GF Dimmock (RAF) and Sergeant GW Vines (RAF) survived the ditching and were picked up by a Spanish fishing boat. They were taken to Spain and briefly interned before being returned to England
Flying Officer Russell would be killed in action 1944-01-21 in 433 Squadron Halifax HX 283 BM-R on a raid on the synthetic oil plants at Magdeburg, Germany |
