1659 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Leeming. Halifax BII aircraft W 1146 struck high ground and crashed six miles north-west of Thwaites, Yorkshire during a cross-country training exercise Sergeant CL Pudney (RCAF)(USA) survived the crash, injured Sergeant Pudney would be awarded the George Cross for his efforts to rescue his fellow crew members following the crash. Sadly, this medal would be posthumously awarded, as Sergeant Pudney would be killed 1943-06-16 in the crash of 405 Squadron Halifax HR 832 that broke up in mid-air after being struck by lightning |
