10 Coastal Operational Training Unit, St Eval, Whitley V aircraft BD 282, flying an anti-submarine patrol at an altitude of about 150 feet under low cloud had an engine failure and ditched in the sea. There were some crew injuries but all survived and boarded their emergency dinghy with pilot Pilot Officer WP Hugli (RCAF) in command. A distress signal was sent before the aircraft ditched and air/sea rescue operations were launched. Poor weather conditions hampered the search efforts and the crew spent the night in the dinghy Weather conditions improved somewhat the next day and the crew of BD 282 was spotted by a Sunderland from 461 RAAF Squadron. The Sunderland attempted to land in the swell but stalled and crashed. The Sunderland crew abandoned their sinking aircraft into their dinghy with the loss of one crew member. The surviving members of the Sunderland joined the Whitley crew and they tied their dinghies together as the air/sea search continued. The Sunderland had radioed it's position before attempting to land and the French destroyer La Combattante sailed for the position given. The Whitley crew had to spend another night in their dinghy, now joined by the Sunderland crew, but they were all picked up by the destroyer at 10 AM on May 29, 1943 without further incident Detail from book "Shot Down and in the Drink" by Graham Pitchfork, pages 115-118 Pilot Officer WP Huigli (RCAF) would be killed 1944-04-25, flying 424 Squadron Halifax III aircraft HX 318 QB-O over Germany |
