427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas) RAF Leeming. The crew of Halifax III aircraft LV 828 ZL-? were on a night cross-country navigation exercise and fuel consumption test flight when a port engine failed and the propeller went out of control, broke off and hit the other port engine with such force that that engine was sheared from its mounts. The pilot ordered the crew to bale and stayed at the controls while his crew abandoned the aircraft. Pilot JM Matherley (RCAF)(USA) was killed in the crash Pilot Officer WC Hall (RCAF) (then, Sgt) baled and survived, safe Pilot Officer Hall would be killed 1944-03-31 on 427 Squadron Halifax III LV 898 ZL-D on a raid to Nuremberg, Germany |
