24 Operational Training Unit RAF Honeybourne, Whitley V aircraft AD 697 TY-J was on a BULLSEYE sortie (navigational exercise which simulated an operational sortie) which was to target London, England. Over the city they discovered they were in the midst of a real air raid, and they had an engine knocked out by allied anti-aircraft fire. Unable to maintain height, and unable to get airfields below to turn on their lights due to the raid, they spotted a light below which was at a small airfield and crash-landed on the adjacent golf course Sergeant GF Fielding (RCAF), Sergeant JJ Mulvaney (RCAF) and their crew survived, safe (Lancaster, C et al) |
