Garwood enlisted in the Merchant Marine in May,1917 and was sunk by a U-boat off Ireland on his first trip. When he got back to his home he travelled to Toronto and enrolled as a cadet in the RFC. He died when he put his Curtiss JN-4 into a spin at 2000ft and pulled out, but went into a spinning nosedive straight to the ground. He died on impact.
