Carr gained RAeC certificate No 504 in June 1913. He was a well known as a pre-war competition pilot for Grahame-White Aeroplanes. He travelled to Montrose with Geoffrey de Havilland as part of the failed Coastal Patrol scheme. He returned to London and was assigned to 3 Sqn in France. I could not discover whether he travelled by air or by sea. He was commissioned in April 1915 and won the DCM in June 1915. He was promoted to Captain in December 1915, later becoming a Major. He was awarded the Air Force Cross in November 1918.
