Whealy received his Aviator's Certificate (Am. 409) at the Atlantic Coast Aeronautic School in Newport News, Virginia on 1916-02-05. He was commissioned on 1916-02-29 and posted to 3 Wing on 1916-08-24. Serving with 3(N) Sqn and 9(N) Sqn during the spring and summer of 1917, Whealy scored seven victories while flying the Sopwith Pup. In the fall of 1917, he began flying the Sopwith Camel and scored an additional twenty victories for a total of 27Vs, before he was posted to Home Establishment on 1918-09-24.
